Soccer has long been over. The Christmas and New Year holidays are over and everyone has fully recovered. Now it is time for the mid-winter
sports that we are deeply involved. Saturday is a big day – my two boys are playing in their first organized basketball games! It is as much fun as VSA (Soccer) and after the anxious moment at first they are now having a blast. We all really look forward to the basketball games and this weekend was a big disappointment when we received a call that the games were cancelled because the heating in the Gymnasium was not working. It is one of the sports that we can all play, watch and enjoy. This league in particular is unique in that it not only teaches the concept of basketball but also incorporates some religion in a very non-intrusive way so that children of all nationalities and religions feel welcome.
The games are held at Battlefield Baptist Church and after each 45 minute practice the teams gather for a 15 minute inspirational, team building exercise that includes learning a verse from the Bible. This week my son is supposed to learn this verse “Everyone should be quick to listen. But they should be slow to speak. They should be slow to get angry.” For learning this he will get a star. All the kids can earn stars for good sportsmanship, being “Jesus-like”, offence, defense, playing well and other things. There is really no pressure though, all kids are treated equally and they love earning stars. My boys love it and and from what we have seen we think all the way around this will be a great activity for years. And, the price can’t be beat – $90 for the season that includes the uniforms!

Thank you Scott and Thalia. Scott, please feel free to take anything you wish from this post. The season has 2 more games left and I must say the kids are learning so much about basketball and a few of life’s many lessons. Everyone at Battlefield Baptist Church and the coaches are so nice, we feel fortunate to be a part of this experience.

The Upwards Baskeball Awards celebration will be held at Kettle Run High School’s gymnasium, which is located at 7403 Academic Ave, Nokesville at 10 am on Saturday, 16 March. If possible, try to be there NLT 9:40 am so you can find a great seat for those picture taking opportunities. The boys will receive their much deserved trophies and their team pics we took a couple weeks ago.
Mark Lippard, a local variety entertainer, will also be at the Awards Celebration doing juggling and comical things for everyone!
